Longhorn is back

Remember ogling at screenshots of the “next generation” of Windows back around 2004? You know what I’m talking about: the Longhorn project. Yeah, that’s the one. With the much-touted WinFS file system and snazzy graphics, Longhorn was going to blow us all away, but it didn’t. What went wrong? I don’t really remember, but I do know that a bunch of coders and designers has revived the project to try and finish what Microsoft started. They have publicly released something they call the Longhorn Reloaded M1 Technical Refresh, downloadable using a BitTorrent client. Weighing in at 780 MB, it’s actually quite light when compared to Vista, most Linux distributions, or MacOS X Tiger.

The downsides? Here’s what Gizmodo had to say about it: “Should you use this as your primary OS? We don’t think so. Using a half-finished operating system with loads of bugs is a good idea only if you’re going to be developing things for the OS, or if you’re just checking it out for fun.”

All in all, it looks like something one would like to just have around, just in case.
